In some respects these issues have reached a critical tipping point. Many of us believe that it is time for the church to take a united stand, to speak with one voice. With respect to all three of the issues addressed in the Declaration, important decisions are being made now or will be made soon. For the sake of fundamental justice and the common good, it is important that the right decisions be made.
In September 2009, clergy, academics and organizational leaders from Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant backgrounds joined in Manhattan to form and sign a statement called the Manhattan Declaration. This is a very historic document; the leaders of the three great traditions of the Christian faith have, for the first time in this generation, come together to make a bold statement about the most pressing moral issues of our day. I believe it is the most significant evangelical statement of where we as evangelicals stand in recent history.
As Jim Daly of Focus on the Family notes, The Manhattan Declaration is an excellent example of achieving the balance of Truth and Grace required of us as followers of Jesus. This is a document that exhorts us to champion Christian truths in a Christian manner. It stands for something.
The purpose of the declaration is simply to speak with one voice on the most pressing moral issues of our day. Cardinal Justin Rigali observed at the press conference at which the Declaration was released, the foundational principles it defends ‘are not the unique preserve of any particular Christian community or of the Christian tradition as a whole....They are principles that can be known and honored by men and women of goodwill even apart from divine revelation. They are principles of right reason and natural law.’
Yours for the Kingdom, Bob |
